I came across a great story today – BehavioSec raises €1m for behavior-based identity theft prevention.
BehavioSec is a Swedish company. However, there is an Irish connection :o Its CTO is Neil Costigan, who is Irish and ex-DCU :)
Well done!

I am rapidly falling in love with a new piece of hardware. It is built on cutting-edge technology, and it is strongly associated with mobility :) It is not a PDA, table, or digital camera… It is a car! Not any car, but the Nissan Leaf.
Normally I am not a big fan of cars. They just do not excite me so much :|
However, the Leaf is different. It is widely being described as the first all electric car that is a viable alternative to a fossil fuel car!
So why do I like it so much? I find the concept of a vehicle running on clean energy very appealing. I love the fact that it does not pollute. It think that motor technology is far more exciting than engine technology. It is clean, simple, and far less prone to wear-and-tear (no clutch, gearbox, fan belts, .. no liquids of any type)! Also, it has to be a pleasure to drive a vehicle with an almost constant torque output!

The reports that I have read to date have all been very positive. Here is a small sample:
I will be watching the Leaf keenly :)

I attended an event this week that was aimed at developers of services for consumption on mobile devices. The majority present were developing these as platform specific mobile applications.
However, many present expressed concerns with pursuing this route. In particular, the following concerns were expressed:
- It is becoming increasingly difficult, and costly, to maintain separate development teams to target the specific platforms.
- The value of being present in the application stores is decreasing as they become more cluttered.
- There is frustration with the limited hardware access that some device manufacturers allow.
It was also interesting to hear that there were very encouraging sentiments towards developing web applications. After reading HTML5 Is An Oncoming Train, But Native App Development Is An Oncoming Rocket Ship recently, I was surprised by this! Personally, I think that it is the way forward!

There is another interesting insight into how the taxpayers’ money is spent by third level institutions. (I previously wrote about this in How DERI Spends the Taxpayers’ Money.) This time it involves WIT (home of TSSG), and you can read about it in College president defends €100,000 spent on taxis.
In fairness, it probably sounds worse than it actually is! I recall meeting five UL academics at an event in Dublin. They travelled between Limerick and Dublin by limousine, because it was cheaper than buying five return train tickets!

I updated my version of WordPress tonight. Unfortunately, each time I do this the size of my tag cloud is reset to 45 :( The instructions outlined in WordPress Categories and Tags no longer work. However, the instructions outlined in How To Customize The WordPress Tag Cloud work perfectly!
I am sure I will need to reference this page many times in the future!

All afternoon I have been hearing about Microsoft‘s acquisition of Skype! See Done Deal! Big Deal. Smart Deal? Microsoft Buys Skype For $8.5 Billion In Cash.
I am really surprised by this! Not so much that Skype has been sold, but more by the fact that Microsoft is the buyer!

I started using Firefox 4 today. It has been a good experience so far!
Perhaps the most noticeable difference so far is that the user interface is very different. I was going to revert it back to the previous layout, as described in Three annoying things about Firefox 4 (and how to fix them). However, then I decided to leave it. I guess that somebody put a lot of thought into the changes, so the least I could do was try them for a day :)
By the end of the day I had decided that the new layout was better ;)
