I had to validate some web pages today that are optimised for mobile devices. I found ready.mobi very useful!
The web pages that I checked got a score of 5. I do not know what the maximum score is though!

I read about the latest PDA from HTC today – my favourite PDA manufacturer :o Its latest offering is the HTC Hero. Probably the best review that I read was HTC Hero review.
HTC Hero
This PDA appears to be very nice, although its “chin” (the bent piece at the bottom) seems strange!
I have not actually handled an Android based PDA yet, so I am not sure that I would be happy to move away from Windows Mobile!

I have a friend who visited Ted Johnson’s shop today, because she wanted to buy a new pair of Crocs. Apparently, this shop has the largest range of Crocs in Ireland :o
While she was wandering around the shop she received a Bluetooth message informing her that if she showed the message to the checkout assistance then she would get a discount! So she got the Crocs that she wanted, and she was delighted to get a novel discount! She is wondering why more shops do not do this, especially in busy areas. Clearly, she does not feel it is a form of spaming!
Anyway, well done to Ted Johnson :)

I used WURFL (Wireless Universal Resource FiLe) during the week for the first time. Specifically, I was using WALL (Wireless Abstraction Library – I think!)!
I was really impressed by how simple it made designing a site to support multiple types of mobile devices!

I was searching for something today relating to .mobi domains, and I saw an interesting list on a side panel of the page I was reading. The heading stated something like New .mobi Sites, and it then listed about 10 sites. The one that caught my attention was mobilporn.mobi (This is NOT suitable for viewing in work)!
I do not know if there is already a huge number of pornography web sites that are specially designed for mobile devices. It would not surprise me if there were!
Pornography is always associated with the seedy side of the Internet. However, it is worth remembering that pornography web sites were making money on the Internet long before any other web sites! So, to a certain extent, they are trend setters!

I read an article during the week describing how several of the major mobile phone manufacturers have agreed to develop a standard mobile phone charger for use throughout the EU! I think that this would be very useful, and I am surprised that I never thought about this before now! The original article that I read is All change for mobile chargers.
I wonder what other aspects of consumer electronics could be standardised. The most obvious one that I can think of is laptop chargers.

It has been exactly one month since I installed OpenOffice, as described in OpenOffice First Impressions. Since then I have been using Writer for all of my word processing requirements. I had a few occasions to create new spreadsheets using Calc, but I did not need to use any of the other applications. The documents that I was working with were all relatively simple, and I was using both the Windows version and the Linux version equally.
I am very happy with using it to date. I have not had a single problem, or found any features lacking. I am also pleasantly surprised with how easy it was to transition to using it :o
I am using the OpenDocument format to save all of my files. The only downside to this is that I cannot open these files on my Windows Mobile PDA :( Furthermore, I cannot find any OpenDocument readers for Windows Mobile. I did not originally envisage this problem!

Mobile 2.0 Europe started today in Barcelona. Both the Developer Day and the Speakers seem really interesting!
I wish that I was there!

I am hearing and reading a lot about Bing this week! Microsoft seems to be putting a lot of resources behind it! I have not tried using it yet. This is mostly because I am happy with Google, so there is no real incentive for me to change my search engine. I previously had very bad experiences with Cuil. (I must write about them here :o )
Today somebody showed me the Maps feature of Bing. I thought that the interface seemed nice, and the satellite photos were good. It certainly is as good as Google Maps.
However, then I was shown the Bird’s Eye view! This really impressed me!

Above you can see the Bird’s Eye view of Camp Nou (home of the 2009 Champions League winners).

One of the web sites that I visit most often using my PDA is Wikipedia. However, I only realised this week that there is an excellent version of the web site that is designed for mobile devices! The address is mobile.wikipedia.org.
m.wikipedia.org also works, but it gives an information rich web page that is more similar to the desktop version of the Wikipedia home page.
